Newspapers at the New Mexico State Library

The New Mexico State Library’s newspaper collection includes current issues on paper and historic newspapers on microfilm with some searchable online.  We currently subscribe to about 50 daily and weekly newspapers from throughout New Mexico. The microfilm collection consists of thousands of reels of newspapers (including many that are now no longer being published) dating back to 1849.

These are the current subscriptions to local New Mexico newspapers. Older issues of these newspapers can be requested by your local library through interlibrary loan so that you may view them there at your convenience.

You can find a listing of the historical newspapers that are held in the microfilm collection using our online catalog. Simply do a search for newspapers and then limit the results by microform.  If you need assistance finding a newspaper, please ask a librarian.

In addition to New Mexico newspapers, we have subscriptions to the following newspapers:

  • New York Times
  • Wall Street Journal

Using Newspaper Microfilm Resources at the New Mexico State Library

The New Mexico State Library's Southwest Collection holds thousands of rolls of microfilm for New Mexico newspapers dating from the territorial period of the 1850’s to the present.

This collection is currently available for in-library use Monday through Friday from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.  (Please note that the State Library is closed on all New Mexico state holidays.)  View driving directions.

Microfilm reader/printers are available on site. Since we do loan microfilm, not every reel is available for in-library use every day. Please check our online catalog or contact the Southwest reference for assistance at 505-476-9790.

Most newspaper microfilm is available for interlibrary loan. The State Library will loan any other library up to 3 reels of microfilm per request for a period of 30 days. Please contact your local library to initiate your request.
